Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER)

SEAAK works with its members to prepare and provide for rapid mobilization of qualified structural engineers to assist emergency management agencies and the public in responding to disasters. We prepare to respond to earthquakes, floods, landslides, explosions or other disaster events.

SEAAK uses ATC-20/45 Damage Assessment methods to performa rapid and detailed evaluations of structures after a disaster event. Training is administered through the California OES Structural Assessment Program.

The SEER committee prepares the SEAAK community for a response by:

  • Offering Cal OES SAP Training

  • Communication with Alaska DHS officials to make them aware of our capabilities

  • Coordinates deployment of volunteers after a disaster event

How to Get Involved

SEAAK SEER members are prepared to be deployed as volunteer disaster evaluators. If you would like to be included in the volunteer roster for such a deployment please take the following steps:

  • Complete Cal OES SAP Training

    • Offered regularly through SEAAK

    • Upon completion you will be issued an ID card and added to the California roster

History of SEAAK SEER

The SEAAK SEER group was initiated on the afternoon of November 29, 2018 when an email sent out to the SEAAK community.

At 8:29am on November 30th, 2018, Anchorage Alaska was impacted by the largest earthquake event since the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake.

The nascent SEER group immediately sprung into action and was coordinating with local and state officials within hours of the event.

Over the next few weeks SEER volunteers donated hundreds of hours and evaluated dozens of structures on behalf of the State of Alaska. These efforts greatly assisted in the rapid community recover from this event.
